The museum – Its history
Founded in 1914, the Stillfried Museum Society aimed at building and operating a museum for prehistory. It should house the archaeological collection of Engelbert Neuner, a local teacher and was intended to be the home of future finds.
After World War II the museum owes Kurt Hetzer – then president of the museum society – that the treasures did not end up in the vaults of the national museums in Vienna. He was the driving force behind the reopening of the museum, unfortunately he did not live to see the opening in 1955.
1974 saw the 100th anniversary of the archaeological in Stillfried. This was the reason for a new scientific look into the Stillfried finds and for a refurbished exhibition. For the first time in the history of the museum regular opening hours could be fixed.
In 1979 and later on in 1995 the exhibition was completely modernized and enlarged. Since then the presentation has been called Stillfried – Centre for Prehistory.
