STILLFRIED PREHISTORIC CENTER
Stillfried has been renowned for its archaeological finds for almost 140 years.
For more than 30 000 years people have been dwelling in the Stillfried area, from the hunter-gatherers of the late Ice-Age to the settlers of the Middle Ages and then on into the present days.
Our museum aims at bringing Stillfried history to life and displays hand-picked items from the excavations. Between 1969 and 1989 Prof. Dr. Fritz Felgenhauer from Vienna's University supervised a major project involving various scientist from several institutions. His excavations provided the largest part of the finds displayed today. He was followed by Prof. Dr. Clemens Eibner from the University of Heidelberg. In recent years Dr. Walpurga Antl from the Museum for Natural History in Vienna has been in charge of excavations in a dwelling site by rendeer hunters on Kranawetberg close to Stillfried.
